We performed weighed food intakes of each meal on 54 occasions over the course of a 9 month feeding trial in 11 convents in Manila. Conversion of this data to a nutrient database allowed us to utilize six published algorithms (Monsen, Tseng, Bhargava, Hallberg, Reddy, Du) to estimate mean daily iron absorption. The Monsen and Hallberg equations yielded similar estimates of 0.72 and 0.63 mg Fe/d, while the Tseng and Du models estimated only 0.26 and 0.24 mg Fe/d. The intermediate estimates were from the Bhargava and Reddy models of 0.34 and 0.37 mg/d. Some models had severe restrictions in utility because of the data originally utilized. Since we know the actual change in iron status of these subjects over time (Haas et al 2005) we can compare estimates to reality as well as optimize the prediction algorithms.
