Plasma Choline Concentration and Dietary Choline Intake of Some Korean Young Adults

The purpose of this study is to investigate dietary choline intake and plasma choline concentration of Korean young adults and their correlation. The subjects of 30 Korean young adults were recruited from college students of 20 to 30 years old in Daejeon metropolitan city. The aliquots of foods that the subjects had taken for one day were collected with use of duplicate food collection method and overnight fasting blood were also collected. Total choline content of one day meal and total plasma choline directly was analyzed with the use of enzymatic method using choline oxidase, and plasma free choline with liquid chromatography ‐ mass spectrometry method. Mean plasma free choline concentration was 9.19±2.05μmol/L in male subjects and 8.11±1.70μmol/L in female subjects in total range of 5.08‐14.01μmol/L. Mean intakes of total choline were 634.53±353.68mg in male subjects(253.51–1724.14mg) and 473.99±183.76mg in female subjects(240.85–938.06mg). Plasma choline concentration showed positive correlation with choline intake in female subjects, but not in male subjects. From the result, it is suggested that the level of choline intake of these subjects was not in lower state, compared to other nutrients intakes obtained from the food the subjects had taken. and the association with intake amount and plasma concentration need to be clarified by more extensive studies.
