Healthy People 2010 is a comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention agenda for the United States. With 467 objectives in 28 focus areas, it is designed to improve the health of Americans during the first decade of the 21st century. This paper will identify nutrition and overweight objectives in the Healthy People 2010 program, define progress towards the year 2010 and identify disparities among population subgroups. The goal of HP2010 Focus Area 19, Nutrition and Overweight, is to promote health and reduce chronic disease associated with diet and body weight. The midcourse review of FA19 addresses progress made during the first half of the decade in improving health and eliminating health disparities. Of the 6 objectives and 5 sub‐objectives for which trend data are available, all except 2 moved away from the targets. None of the objectives met their targets yet. Iron deficiency among 1–2 years old and food security among U.S. households moved toward the targets. One objective, meals and snacks at school, was dropped due to lack of a reliable data source. Of the 10 population‐based objectives for which race/ethnic specific data and trend data are available, only obesity among persons 20 years and over showed decreased disparity, indicating that adult obesity has become a condition that affects all race/ethnic groups.
