I am particularly excited to have this opportunity to speak about teaching because, as time goes on, I find that teaching is as important to me as research. Of course, in academic science many of us are fortunate that we don’t have to choose between the two; in fact, the best teaching occurs when it’s intimately mixed with research, even at the undergraduate level. I will recall a few of my own teaching experiences, but mostly talk about what HHMI is doing to try to improve science education at all levels, from K‐12 through undergraduate, graduate and medical school, and public education as well. Why have I enjoyed teaching so much? I think it’s because I’m a perpetual student, and I find teaching to be a wonderful way to learn new facts and new concepts.
