Mortality rates for released fish in Atlantic mackerel ( Scomber scombrus ) purse seine fisheries can be unacceptably high. By examining physiological responses and survival in simulated capture and release trials, we show that fish condition and survival rates may be enhanced by reducing crowding density and duration prior to release.
