Humans have overloaded the world’s nutrient fluxes. Formerly clear waters are now dominated by a variety of photosynthesizing microorganisms instead of underwater plants. With insights into the diverse metabolism of these microorganisms, the chances for restoration can be improved. We summarize here the developments of recent years.
