Sounds other than spoken language play an important role in communication. Moreover, there are demands for high-quality timbre synthesis technology for creating multimedia contents. NTT Communication Science Laboratories is exploring technologies for synthesizing both musical instrument sounds and singing voices. This paper introduces three technologies: i) a physical model of the “sho,” a Japanese traditional music instrument, ii) a model for synthesizing throat singing, and iii) a sound synthesis system called “Otkinshi” as a tool for content creation.
