The reasons for the nonlinear stage of deformation of two-cantilever specimens with a chevron notch under loading by the wedge method are investigated. Three main reasons are analyzed: plastic deformation, stable crack extension in the chevron notch zone, and t→m phase transformation induced by stress concentration. It is shown that the main reason for the inelastic behavior of ceramics is t→m transformation.
