The article is devoted to the problem of digitalization of higher technical education in transport engineering and is aimed to improve the efficiency of independent work of students and improving the classroom work of the teacher with students through the visualization of lecture materials. The article presents a new electronic educational resource (EER) on the subject “Material Science”, which is a multimedia textbook on the chapter “Theory of heat treatment” and “Practice of heat treatment” for visualization of complex hidden processes occurring in metals during heat treatment. Specific examples show how the usage of multimedia teaching methods in the educational process contributes to the visualization of invisible diffusion processes, which are accompanied by the formation of micro-and nanosized structural components. The technology of open modular systems (OMS), used to create a software environment, its advantages and wider interactive possibilities in comparison with traditional software tools are described.
