The brake system is a braking system located on the landing gear on an airplane. Brakes are one of the most important components of safety, and performance in the airplane. This study uses the observation method, the interview method with the engineer and the experimental method at The Material Laboratory, Polytechnic Ceper, Klaten. The purpose of this study is to determine the function, characteristics, and effect of chemical compositions on the characteristics of the brake lining on the Cessna Caravan Type 208B aircraft. The results of the brake lining as, and characteristic of brake lining are reducing speed and stopping the aircraft wheels. The characteristics of the brake lining as follows result in a hardness value of 205 VHN and the chemical composition consist of Fe 95,9%; Cu 0.8%; Carbon 0,33%; 0,235% Si; Mn 0,468%; Al 0,235%; Mo 0.151%; and Cr 0,772%. This brake lining materials are included in medium carbon steel with chromium alloy. The brake lining material is steel medium carbon which has hard, resistance wear, durable use life. The influence of chemical composition on characteristics of brake lining on this aircraft is the higher the composition carbon the resistance to wear.
