I am grateful that we are once again able to organize the 2nd Global Congress of Construction, Material and Structural Engineering 2019 (GCoMSE 2019). GCoMSE 2019 jointly organised by UTHM Commercial and Jamilus Research Center for Sustainable Construction (JRC) as a platform for scientists, researchers and engineers to share their knowledge and experiences in creating sustainable and environmental friendly world for the present and the future. We all know that this world is borrowed from the next generation and in other for us to ensure that it is well looked-after, we have to maintain the three important pillars of sustainability i.e. economics, environment and society. These three pillars are the catalyst to ensure that the world is livable, continue to exist and at the same time is developed to enhance the socio-culture of mankind. The GCoMSE 2019 theme, ‘Towards Sustainable Structures and Construction’ can be describe as the needs to prepare the world for future generation to continue the responsibility to make the world a better place to live. It is the desire of all population and generations that mankind will continue to exist and lead the world. It has been portrayed by many in science fiction movies that the apes will rule the world or the world will be destroyed because of our negligence and too engross in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). It is possible that if we continue not to care, all the fiction can become reality. The best example is the telephone evolution. From wired to wireless and from a typical phone to a smart phone. Before this, constructing buildings was considered difficult and was limited to certain people. But now, everybody can construct a house with some skills and with help of the application of industrialized building system (IBS). With research works on reducing the usage of natural materials and increasing the use of recycled materials, pollution and negative environmental impacts can be reduced. Thus, it is our duty to ensure that we conduct the necessary steps towards sustainability of the world in whatever discipline and role that we have. “With Wisdom We Explore” Sincerely, ASSOCIATE PROF. IR. TS. DR. ABDUL HALIM BIN ABDUL GHANI Chairman of GCoMSE 2019
