The article describes the methodology of experimental studies on the detection and quantification of under-paint corrosion of metal parts with the use of infrared thermography. This study provides a description of the process of reducing the performance of a metal structure over time on the basis of the mathematical apparatus of the theory of catastrophe. The dependence of the diagnostic signal on the color of the paint coat, which characterizes the presence of a hidden corrosion defect is presented. Suggestions for the implementation of this method to evaluate the degree of corrosion damage in control objects with various colored paint coats are proposed.
