The paper outlines the methodological approaches to the problem of mathematical modeling of electrical processes taking place in the surface layer of the atmosphere. A comparative analysis of various problem statements was carried out in terms of the possibilities of qualitative and quantitative analysis, as well as a set of hypotheses taken into account in the models regarding the properties of the studied processes.
