A series of coating samples were prepared with various combinations of solvents being tested via a two-step dip-coating route. The surface hydrophobicity was studied by measuring water and oil contact angles. Furthermore, the surface topography, optical and abrasive properties of the selected 4 coating samples were examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer and friction cycle test, respectively. The best overall properties were achieved with the coating sample prepared by nontoxic epoxy resin-ethanol (Step 1) and isopropanol (Step 2). The water and oil contact angles reached 152.0° and 112.7°, respectively, and water contact angle remained 150.2° upon 5 cycles of the friction test with sandpaper. The transmittance of 80% was obtained in the wavelength ranging from 400 to 800 nm.
