Eucalyptus, a main fast-growing tree species for plantation in southern China, has remarkably contributed to balance the supply and demand of wood in the country. Eucalyptus is mainly used for processing wood-based panels, including fiberboards, plywoods, and chipboards, with low added value because of its poor dimensional stability and susceptibility to cracking and deformation. In this paper, the mechanisms, merits, and demerits of wood acetylation, furfurylation, and resin-related and thermal modifications were summarized. The research status of the chemical modification of eucalyptus was analyzed, and existing problems and future research directions of eucalyptus modification were stated briefly.
