Welding of soft materials like aluminium, copper by fusion welding process is not achievable due to the generation of defects. These materials have a wide area of industrial applications. Therefore, their welding is one of the most challenging tasks in the joining industries. Since welding is used to join two materials or parts of materials of similar or dissimilar nature, therefore, the repudiation of the welded product due to poor weld quality is not acceptable in the modern joining industries. Friction stir welding can minimize these defects because in this process there is no melting of workpiece occurs. In the past, many researchers have examined a number of approaches to enhance the weld joint properties. The observational and notional analysis shows weld joint quality can be enhanced remarkably with the appropriate choice of process parameters. This article analyses the research work accomplished by various researchers in the field of modelling of the friction stir welding operation.
