The development of road transport in the world is highly connected with increased requirements for safety and cost-effectiveness of carrying out passenger and cargo transportation, reducing the negative impact of road transport on people and the environment, as well as the desire of countries that do not have direct access to energy sources, “get off the oil needle”. To ensure the fulfillment of these requirements, the key development areas in the automotive industry of developed countries are unmanned vehicles and electric vehicles. Taking into account foreign experience, the article looks at the prospects and features of developing unmanned cargo vehicles with electric traction, at operation conditions of the Russian Federation, which differ markedly from the conditions of vehicle operation in Central Europe, North America and the countries of the Asian region.
