The article analyzes the classification of mechanical engineering products; it is shown that in the overwhelming majority of classifications, products are considered as objects of operation and there are practically no classifications of products as objects of production (except for the classification of parts) and objects of disposal, which negatively affects the efficiency of machine-building production. A methodological approach is proposed to construct a classification of products as objects of operation, items of production and disposal objects.
