The shift from the production and utilization of synthetic non-plastics to bio-based plastics is on the high side. To curb the environmental nuisances, the synthetic plastics have presented over time. Consequently, it is required to consider some factors that can be manipulated or adjusted to facilitate the biodegradation process. The factors that determine the rate of biodegradation of bio-based and fossil-based plastic and the features of biodegradable plastics are highlighted in this review. This is projected to secure a sustainable bio-plastic synthesis and catalyze bio-recycling and biodegradation strategies.
