In the article, the author attempts to determine the position of restoration and preservation of architectural monuments in a range of actions aimed at designing architectural environments in contemporary Russian megalopolises. The author has proven that public and private funding of restoration can re-energize cultural heritage assets. They serve as dominant urban elements in present-day megalopolises and boost traveling. The author analyzes features of restoration funding and assesses private investment programmes focused on the restoration of cultural heritage assets. The author has analyzed several cases of the “One ruble for one square meter” programme implemented in the Russian capital and assessed the restoration of cultural heritage assets performed there. The set of methods, employed by the author in his research, includes the retrospective analysis, the comparative historical method, and the general research method of inductive generalization.
