The article considers urban architecture as a space-time phenomenon that has an aesthetic and mental-cognitive impact on citizens. Author’s viewpoint is that a positive perception of architectural space improves a city social capital. Modern urban planners need to understand citizen’s satisfaction with the architectural image and elements of urban space. Analytical part of the article presents a survey of perception of architectural environment by residents of the largest Ural city Ekaterinburg. The study showed that citizens are not satisfied with appearance of their city. People would like to see more interesting architectural forms, innovative design of public spaces and a variety of colors. Respondents replied that for improving the comfort of urban space, the city authorities need to pay more attention to landscaping, greening, convenience of recreation and pedestrian areas. It is actualized, that the modern trend for industrial cities is the humanization of urban environment. In this context, the author suggests some recommendations for improving the attractiveness and convenience of industrial cities. In a strategic way, refinement the city’s image will increase the migration and tourism potential.
