Smart cities have been developed in China for more than ten years and have become a breakthrough point for my country to achieve new urbanization and urban modernization. This article introduces the development process of smart cities in China. It discussed the advantages of the 5G technology applied to smart cities. In addition, this article analyzes the role of 5G applications from five scenarios: smart transportation, environmental protection, medical care, security, and government affairs. Finally, it discussed the main challenges facing China’s 5G smart cities and gave corresponding recommendations.
