Freshwater ecosystem monitoring is a historical necessity for the development of water resources management. The meaning, service functions and influencing factors of the freshwater ecosystem are summarized, and the shortages of the monitoring and evaluation indicators related to the freshwater ecosystem are analyzed. In order to understand the current situation, changes and evolution trends of freshwater ecosystems, combined with the principles, theories and methods of monitoring and evaluation of freshwater ecosystems, from the different levels of species, populations, communities and ecosystems, structural indicators, functional indicators and stability indicators are proposed.
