
Properties and environmental impact of available firewood in Brunei Darussalam

Five types of firewood used in Brunei Darussalam is identified. Properties, such as wood density, moisture percentage, ash content and elemental composition of plants were determined and correlated with the calorific value and evaluated in relation to their properties and environmental impact when burned. It was revealed that the firewood with the highest calorific value does not necessarily constitute the best option as fuel, if elemental composition is taken into account. The variation of the wood density, calorific value, ash contains and elemental composition C, N, and their indirect impact on the environment are discussed in this paper.
