The importance of understanding the factors that drives academic performance in education and policy making can never be over emphasized. This research studied how instructional materials improve the academic performance of physics in some selected secondary schools in Sokoto state, Nigeria. Senior Secondary students (SS1, SS2 & SS3) from three schools were used for the study; the schools were having a total of 2850 students. Students and teachers were involved in the study. The study used descriptive survey method and percentages were used in analyzing the research questions raised by the study. Further analysis and interpretation of the data revealed that there is inadequate instructional materials and also few physics teachers in Sokoto uses instructional materials in teaching which has impact on the level of performance of the students. Recommendations were suggested to the Policy makers to provide basic instructional materials and monitor the use and maintenance of the materials in various schools.
