I discuss a simple model of maximal axion misalignment. Maximally-misaligned axions with m a > 10 −22 eV are compelling DM candidates with a rich and interesting phenomenology. On the other hand, maximally-misaligned axions lighter than m ∼ O (100) H 0 may behave as dark energy with decay constants substantially smaller than the Planck scale, avoiding consistency problems associated to trans-Planckian scales.
