Welcome to the proceedings of the 2021 PETER-NMH meeting. This meeting is one of ongoing series, held on average once every two years, with previous locations being in London (United Kingdom), Pardubice (Czech Republic) and Saint Malo (France). This years conference took place in the newly popular location of ‘on-line’ due to the difficulties of travel and the wisdom of a large international group meeting in a confined space for an extended period. The meeting series brings together scientists, engineers and interested groups who wish to understand, model and predict the behaviour of materials under dynamic loading. The conference is open and has an international scientific and organising committee. The 2021 meeting took place over 3 days and was a mix of invited and contributed talks, many of which led to written articles which can be found in this volume. We are delighted that the expertise and facilities of the Institute of Physics conference teams and publishing arm are involved in making this conference an engaging, friendly and intellectually stimulating place to be . After each contribution there was time given for questions and discussion which probably helped make the task of the reviewers so much simpler. We thank Los Alamos National Laboratory, Institute of Physics, Centre de Etudse Atomiques in their ongoing support and enthusiasm for these meetings. We look forward to the next meeting in this series, which we sincerely hope will be in person. Best Wishes, Marvin A. Zocher LANL Bill Proud Imperial College London Laurent Soulard CEA
