The susceptibility to surface hot shortness of a Cu-containing low alloy steel has been investigated using high temperature treatment tests in air. The grain boundary oxidation of this steel is very serious after soaking at 1100°C for 60 minutes. The oxidation rate of grain boundary was faster than that of internal oxidation at 1100°C but the opposite phenomenon was occurred when the soaking temperature is 1200°C. The phenomenon has an important impact on the susceptibility to surface hot shortness of this steel.
