Photon 2020 was the latest in a long-standing series of biennial conferences that was originally planned to be held at the University of Nottingham in early September 2020. However, shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it became rapidly apparent that an in-person conference would not be possible due to government imposed restrictions on travel and the gathering of groups of people. The conference organisers thus decided, with the invaluable support of the IOP conference team, to move Photon 2020 to an online format. Photon 2020 consequently took place from 1 st to 4 th of September 2020, using Zoom and iPoster as the software platforms, and was attended remotely by 414 delegates. The format of the in-person conference was reproduced as far as possible with plenary, invited and contributed talks (45, 30 and 15 minutes in length, respectively) and poster sessions. Time was allowed for questions at the end of the each talk, which were moderated by the session chair. No significant technical difficulties were encountered, for which the conference committee is grateful to the professionalism of the IOP conference team.
