Nowadays, due to the rapid growth of information technology, data representation has to be performed in several ways. Data file includes text, images, audio, video, and animations, which are large and require lots of space in the hard disk. The Video file consists of sequence of images to be framed in single entity. Image Compression is the effective way to reduce the storage space and speedup the transmission. The Video transmission incurs higher bandwidth requirements. It is necessary to transfer the high quality images to the user devices without loss and latency. This gives encouragement to the researchers to find acceptable compression algorithms. Even though many compression schemes exist, there will be the need for fast compression algorithms which produce acceptable quality images or video with minimum size. This paper presents a survey of various research articles about the image or video compression techniques.
