The diversion tunnel of VI Section, XE Project in Xinjiang Autonomous Region was constructed with an open-type tunnel boring machine (TBM). Concerning the unfavorable geological sections encountered during TBM tunneling in the project construction, the author has summarized the engineering countermeasures used to improve the efficiency and construction safety of TBM tunneling.
