In this paper, the present research status on the shear capacity of piers at home and abroad was reviewed, and the principles and methods of the nine formulas for calculating the shear capacity presented by domestic and foreign codes and scholars were introduced in detail. The nine formulas were compared with the test data from Chenglan railway bridge piers to discuss the existing problems. The results show that the calculation formulas proposed by some scholars are more complicated and more factors are taken into account, while the calculation formulas proposed by the codes are simpler and more conservative. The existing formulas for calculating the shear capacity of bridge piers are mostly acquired by fitting of the experimental data and it is too simple to consider reduction effect of the stress distribution and shear capacity of section concrete with the increase of displacement ductility, so it is difficult to evaluate the applicability. Therefore, further research on the calculation formula of shear strength for bridge piers is needed.
