This research is a preliminary study to determine students’ initial knowledge of applying physics material in the environment. Environmentally oriented physics learning is essential to do, especially in the process of developing students’ higher-order thinking skills which include problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, creative thinking skills, and metacognitive abilities. The research was conducted using a survey method on 115 students in several schools in Nganjuk, East Java. The research data includes the selection of physics material that can show a relationship with environment-based learning and the types of high-order thinking skills of students which will be further developed through subsequent research. The results showed that students considered the thermodynamics material as closely related to interactions with the environment. Also, there are materials on Global Warming and Temperature and Heat. Simultaneously, the high-order thinking skills that are expected to be developed in environment-based physics learning are critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities.
