Mathematical problems of solving direct and inverse problems of mechanics of composite structures are formulated. The problems of strength calculation and optimal design of composite overwrapped pressure vessels are investigated. The solutions of the optimization problem have been recieved and verified by solving the direct problems with obtained design parameters using the classical and improved shell theories. Numerical solutions were obtained using the spline collocation and discrete optimization methods.
