Synopsis The differential fivefold cross section for the double ionization of argon by electron impact is calculated taking into account the variations of the effective charges describing each ejected electron during the reaction; the energy of the electron projectile is fixed in the intermediate range, and the ejected electrons have low energies. The initial state is described by the Clementi wavefunction, and the ejected electrons in the final state by Coulomb waves. A comparison is made with the measurements of Jia et al [1].
