The features of the intrinsic cathodoluminescence of pure zinc aluminate ZnAl 2 O 4 having a radiation maximum in the range 250-270 nm are studied. The kinetics of the afterglow of a sample excited by short (∼ 2 ns) pulses is analyzed. Analysis and possible explanation of the influence of the type and composition of the atmosphere, in which zinc aluminate was annealed, is given. Possibilities for a multiple increase in the cathodoluminescence intensity of zinc aluminate for use in bactericidal lamps are demonstrated.
