The STM publications market has been changing since the 1980s when printed abstracts and indexes started to become an integrated part of their database services. The speed of the change has been accelerated and full texts of primary journals have now begun to be made available through various media. The market in Japan for imported STM publications and information services lag behind that of the U.S. and Europe. The time lag of the delay is said to be about three years behind the U.S. market. Present world economy and in particular the economy of Japan are unsteady and the future hard to predict. New technology and culture are changing, the life styles of both individuals and organizations. Authors, publishers, distributors and researchers and librarians on the publishing cycles are all affected. In this paper, I will attempt to give an overview of the present and immediate future of the imported STM publications and information service market in Japan and will extract several important issues which, it is anticipated, will change the marketing climate and environment in the near future.
