In 1993 when the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) celebrated its twenty first birthday there was much talk of the Association coming of age. We are now soon to be twenty five years old. What state are we in? Are we settling down to a comfortable existence in anticipation of a long and uneventful run? I do not think so. We are about to embark on a crucial phase of development. It is therefore a particular honour to be asked to be Chair of the Association in this year of celebration and during this period of significant change as we approach the new millennium.
