grows and as search engines, such as Google Scholar, help researchers to locate material available from IRs.4 Apart from articles deposited into the archive by us on behalf of authors, the Oxford Repository contains very little other material so far, reflecting the difficulty that many IRs seem to be having in encouraging authors to self-archive preprints of their published articles. A study undertaken in 2004 by Mark Ware on behalf of PALS reported that the average number records in all but the three largest of 70 archives using e-prints software was only 130 per archive.6 Publishers want to remove barriers to access as much as anyone else, but there remains a reliable system in place – with costs – that must be supported and carefully developed if we are to continue to maintain high quality and service standards. At Oxford Journals we will continue actively to experiment and share the results of our experimentation. We encourage others to do the same, so that new policies and practices that are introduced with the aim of enhancing the preservation of, and cost-effective access to, high-quality research information are done do so from a firm foundation.
