This paper focuses on the evolving role of secondary publishers within the changing models of web‐assisted information provision. It concludes that the predicted demise of secondary publishing was premature. Instead, everybody is now delivering a service, not just a product and, despite the rhetoric of freeing the literature, even commercial web enterprises are moving towards the subscription model.
