To begin with a caveat: there are no set rules governing the conduct of political representation, nor any professional qualifications required by those of us who are engaged in this work. Trade associations are as individual and culturally diverse as the wide range of interests which they represent, and their directors are as different and various as the backgrounds and previous careers from which they have been drawn. Any attempt, therefore, to describe the disciplines or precepts which underlie this work has to be an expression of personal view, and based largely upon a personal approach and experience.
