In this occasional series we record the views and personal experience of people who have specially contributed to the evolution of ideas in the Journal's field of interest. Reg Smart is a scientist who has over a period of 40 years contributed greatly to the life and times of the Addiction Research Foundation, Ontario. Over that period he had published widely, particularly in relation to aspects of epidemiology. He has also given important and generous support to the international work of WHO.
