The paper describes the origins, development and key features of New Zealand's national drug policy (NDP). This 5‐year policy, launched in July 1998, aims of minimize the harm caused by drug use to both individuals and the community. Major achievements since the release of the NDP are reviewed, focusing on the establishment of a two‐tier monitoring and implementation structure and release of the policy's first intersectoral work programme.
