If the rewards of taking drugs are so great, why do more of us not indulge? From this starting point, this paper explores the almost universal search for altered states of consciousness and escape from self. There is a need for screening for appropriate “alternative highs” after a drug problem has been diagnosed. Exercise, religion, art, music are put forward as alternatives to the drug experience.
