This paper explores individual differences in North Queenslanders' reactions to the first stage of the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse. Women, non‐smokers and those most convinced of the dangers of drug‐taking in the first place were the ones who displayed the greatest change in drug‐related perceptions, attitudes and drinking behaviour. Results support the view that at‐risk groups are likely to resist media communications.
