The frames of reference used by the psychiatrist in evaluating chronic pain are considered, including the psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioural, affective, diagnostic, interpersonal, family and social. It is stressed that the pain experience is not a purely physical phenomenon. Pain management which alleviates any component of the experience is valuable. Narcotics should rarely be used.
