Controlled drinking as a treatment option for problem drinkers is now well established; there is a wealth of evidence demonstrating that problem drinkers can learn to maintain their consumption levels within safe limits. There is a range of strategies that have been included in controlled drinking treatment programs. Unfortunately, most outcome studies have assessed the effect of a treatment package. There is a need for research investigating the effectiveness of the components of such treatment programs. This paper will review issues involved with the implementation of a controlled drinking program as well as discussing the types of strategies which might be used.
