The existing terminology relating to alcohol and other drugs, and recent publications on this subject, have been reviewed. Present terminology was found to be imprecise and emotive. There is no unanimity in several recent proposals for uniform terminology. A major objective has been to evolve a system of terminology which is precise, neutral and can be adopted for general use. Units preferred for expressing quantities and concentrations are also presented.
