The role of nicotine dependence in the establishment of a heavy smoking habit in young people has been little investigated. In this study of high school students, aged 16–18 years, 41% had scores on the Fagerstrom Nicotine Dependency Questionnaire which indicated a high level of nicotine dependence, comparable with that of adult smokers attending a smoking cessation clinic. The implications of this finding are briefly discussed.
