Abstract: The problems of drug use offer an excellent paradigm of community medicine in relation to the health of the community and the health needs of individuals with alcohol and drug related problems. Community health is seen here to be a social rather than a technological issue. Despite rising expenditure on health care, certain groups, including the drug dependent, are being neglected. The problems of defining who has a drug problem, the optimum time, method and place of intervention in the problem and the effectiveness of the intervention are canvassed.
